QUICK STOP AT ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI

So, it was Missouri Part 2 for me and Vince this past weekend.  The first time we were in Missouri was in August 2011 when he attended a conference in Kansas City aka CITY OF FOUNTAINS.  Last weekend, we went to Illinois for a job interview.  We flew from Pennsylvania to St. Louis, Missouri vice versa, and so on the way back home we were able to do a little wandering around downtown St. Louis.

Kiener Plaza

We stayed at The Roberts Mayfair - A Wyndham Hotel, which is about a 10-minute walk away from the Gateway Arch.  On our way to the famous arch, the reddish orange colored fountain in Kiener Plaza caught our attention, and so we just had to stop and take some photos.  Vince and I were both amazed with this fountain and I think this is the first time we saw a dye-colored fountain.  Again, I did a little researching online, and found that park authorities had dyed the water different colors in the past, including teal in support of ovarian cancer awareness and pink for Komen Race for the Cure.  It is currently dyed red in support of the Cardinals, a professional baseball team based in St. Louis.

Across Kiener Plaza is the Old Courthouse, which is Missouri's tallest habitable building from 1864 to 1894.

We also got a great view of the Gateway Arch from Kiener Plaza.  Standing 630 feet, the Gateway Arch is the nation's tallest monument, and commemorates Thomas Jefferson and St. Louis' role in westward expansion of the United States.  The arch was built at a cost of $13M.  Construction began in February 1963 and finished in October 1965.

They say that a visit to St. Louis is not complete without standing at the arch's base and playing professional photographer, so here's one of our attempts to digitally capture the experience using a point and shoot camera ;)

And here is a picture of me by the Missouri River.  This river rounds the northern side of St. Louis to join the Mississipi River on the border between Missouri and Illinois:
That's pretty much what we did in St. Louis. We only had a short time to spare as we were flying back home that morning.  In fact, we missed our flight, but we're fortunate enough to be squeezed in on a flight two hours later that day.  I guess, we had a little fun and lost track of the time.  And yeah, time does fly fast when you're having fun :p

KM:  How much time do we have till our flight?
Vince:  Who cares?! :D

  29. I beg your forgiveness for my cutting and pasting my comment, but there was no way on Earth I would be able to make it around the whole globe to wish everybody a Merry Christmas otherwise.

The magical elves that constitute my staff have demonstrated their lack of respect in either not showing up for work at all, or those that have all seem a little worse for wear (if you catch my drift). All they seem to do is sit around smoking cigarettes that, frankly, smell funny. In addition, they play cards and tell dirty jokes rather than do their jobs! Consequently, the reindeer are all filthy and out of shape.

I now have my two sons pulling the sleigh, but they are struggling. I’ve been told that it’s a big ask for a three and five year old, but I made it this far with a couple of mangy chooks, an arthritic wallaby and three peculiar wombats! Unfortunately, we lost all bar one wombat over Mumbai (and the sole survivor is exhibiting clear signs of PTSD).

Anyway, all the way down here at the bottom of the world (A.K.A. Tasmania), and from myself, Jen, Henry and Ezra, please have a Merry Christmas/Winter Solstice/Hanukkah/Festivus/Ashura and a happy New Year!

I hope that all of your holiday photos turn out to be triumphs, your stocking is stuffed full of lots of tasty treats and not coal and that all your naan/ prawn cocktails/ currywurst are all as tasty as can be!
